Students have until Sept. 1 to process lottery scholarship applications

Students enrolling at Northeast State Community College who have not yet applied for the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship Program have until Sept. 1 to process their applications to become lottery scholarship eligible for the 2006 fall semester.

The lottery scholarship program is funded by state lottery revenues and is administered by the Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC). To be considered for the Lottery Scholarship, a student must complete and submit the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA); no additional application is required. The FAFSA application is available online at www.FAFSA.ed.gov, in the Northeast State Financial Aid Office Room F-102, and at a high school guidance counselor’s office.

Eligible students enrolled in two-year institutions will receive an additional $250 for the HOPE lottery scholarship. Additional money is awarded to students based on high achievement and displayed financial need through the General Assembly Merit Scholarship (GAMS) and the ASPIRE scholarship awards. Since tuition and fee costs for full-time students are considerably less at two-year colleges than four-year institutions, students are actually buying more with their lottery scholarship dollars by attending a community college. Northeast State’s tuition and fees for full-time students taking 12 credit hours or more will be $1,246 per semester for the 2006-2007 academic year. The average tuition and fees cost for full-time students at selected four-year institutions in Tennessee is approximately $2,400 per semester.
