The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), the nation’s leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education, announced that its scholarship application period begins August 1st. In support of its mission to double the rate of Hispanics earning college degrees, HSF provides the Latino community more college scholarships and educational outreach support than any other organization in the country.

The application period begins August 1 for high school seniors graduating in 2007 and for students enrolled in college and in community colleges. For information on eligibility requirements, check http://www.HSF.net.

HSF awarded scholarships totaling $25.3 million to Hispanic students for the 2005-2006 academic year. “I am elated that our organization can provide so many Hispanics with the hope and the resources to follow their dreams to go to college through the generous support of corporate partners, committed individuals and private foundations,” said Sara Martinez Tucker, HSF President and CEO. “These HSF Scholars represent a new wave of Latinos who will serve as the future leaders of America.”

HSF’s typical scholarships average around $2,500; the Gates Millennium Scholarships cover the full unmet needs of scholarship recipients and are funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in partnership with HSF.

Hispanics are the fastest growing and youngest sector of the nation’s population. One in three Hispanics is under 18 with the overall Hispanic population registering a median age of 27.

“It is essential to our country’s future that we educate our young Hispanics so that we can realize the full potential of this sector of the workforce,” Tucker said.

An independent study showed 97 percent of all HSF Scholars receive their undergraduate degrees and 88 percent wind up earning more than the national median income.

HSF is the nation’s leading organization supporting Hispanic higher education. Founded in 1975 as a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization, HSF’s vision is to strengthen the country by advancing college education among Hispanic Americans. In support of its mission to double the rate of Hispanics earning college degrees, HSF provides the Latino community more college scholarships and outreach support than any other organization in the country. Since its founding, HSF has awarded more than 78,000 scholarships, totaling $195 million to Latinos in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam.
