New scholarship funds memorial to forest preserve president’s late son
August 25, 2006 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipThe DuPage Community Foundation announced the establishment of the Paul D. Pierotti Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund was established by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County in memory of Paul Pierotti, the late son of President D. “Dewey” Pierotti Jr. and his wife, Leslie.
The fund was created with founding gifts totaling nearly $40,000. The scholarship fund will be used to generate income for annual scholarships for graduates of DuPage County high schools planning careers in natural resource management or other environmentally related fields of study.
Paul Pierotti was killed in March 1998 as a result of a car crash in West Chicago.
Scholarship applications for the fund will be administered by the Conservation Foundation in Naperville and reviewed by a special selection committee consisting of a Pierotti family member, one Forest Preserve District of DuPage County staff member and three Conservation Foundation staff members. The committee will recommend its selections to the DuPage Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees for final approval.
Eligible students applying for the new Pierotti scholarship must attend a DuPage County high school, possess a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and provide details of academic achievement. Extracurricular student activities will be taken into account, and environmental volunteer work will be considered a plus. Students must write a 350- to 500-word essay on an environmental topic determined annually by the selection committee.
Formal application deadline and essay topic for the scholarship will be announced by the foundation in early 2007. To contribute to the scholarship fund and for more information, call (630) 665-5556 or e-mail jcarlsen@dcfdn.org.
