Brunei: Minister Hosts Dinner For Scholarship Students
August 31, 2006 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipThe Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Pehin Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awg Hj Mohammad, last night hosted a dinner for overseas scholarship students who attended a civic course organised by the Information Department with the cooperation of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Religious Affairs and Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd.
Held at the Dewan DiGadong of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports building, the dinner was attended by 72 overseas scholarship students who will be pursuing their studies abroad this year.
Of the 72 students, 36 will be studying in the United Kingdom and Jordan under the sponsorship of His Majesty’s Government through the Ministry of Education.
Another 21 students are to pursue their studies in the UK under sponsorships from Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd while another 15 students will further their studies in Middle East under the sponsorship of His Majesty’s Government through the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
At last night’s function, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports mingled with the students. The Minister in his speech during the opening ceremony of the civic course held last August 25 said, “As citizens it is our duty and responsibility to preserve our leader’s image, the good name of the nation, race and religion that has a unique tradition, values and social structure while outside the country.”
The objective of the civic course was to give participants an understanding of the current affairs of the government in order to generate a sense of concern and love towards the monarch, race, religion and nation. The course was also meant to make the students respect the values of the nation’s philosophy.
Also present at the function was Pehin Dato Seri (Dr) Hj Awg Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri,.Head of Historical Centre, Dato Paduka Awg Hj Jemat bin Hj Ampal, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Hj Amer Hamzah, Acting Director of Information, as well as other senior officers from the Information Department.
Throughout the six-day course, participants visited several rural areas in Tutong and Belait and also attended several talks in which topics including social issues were raised.
The closing ceremony will be held today at the Information Department with a certificate presentation ceremony. The chief guest will be the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, Pehin Udana Khatib Data Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awg Badaruddin. — Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
