Democracy scholarship contest announced
September 2, 2006 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipThe VFW Post 648 and its Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, announce this year’s “Voice of Democracy Scholarship Competition.â€
Local students are eligible to compete in this annual audio essay program.
Scholarships and awards are made within the local post, state and national VFW.
The first-place winner in each state receives a minimum of a $1,000 scholarship, and a four-day tour of Washington.
State winners are also eligible for a $30,000 first-place National Scholarship.
Students need to be enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program in the United States.
Interested students should write and then record a three- to five-minute audio/essay while expressing their view of the patriotic theme “Freedom’s Challenge.â€
The deadline for student applications is Sept. 29, and the taped essay deadline is Oct. 20.
Foreign exchange students, students over the age 19, and previous Voice of Democracy first-place state winners are ineligible.
Interested students in ninth, 10th, 11th or 12th grade should contact their school guidance teacher.
