Digicel launches annual IT scholarship

Telecommunications company Digicel has announced the launch of an annual IT Scholarship. The scholarship was announced by Digicel General Manager Darren Derrick during Thursday evening’s ICTFEST forum. It will be tenable at the Antigua and Barbuda International Institute of Technology (ABIIT) and a selection committee is currently being put together to vet applicants.
Derrick said that further information on the scholarship will be released.
Explaining the motivation behind the initiative, Derrick said that there is a need to support the development of innovative thinkers in the field of information technology.
Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer noted that the scholarship would be the fulfilment of a commitment made by Digicel at the time of its launch onto the local market, earlier this year.
“It is important for us to recognise what is happening in the field of information technology,†the prime minister said, explaining that Antigua and Barbuda is attempting to launch itself as a major player in what he called an “ICT revolution.â€
PM Spencer said that the government is committed to this drive and will seek to break new ground in the field, playing a lead role in ICT in the Caribbean.
