Scholarship initiative beginning for Tiger Band
September 5, 2006 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipSeveral former Clemson University Tiger Band members are leading a campaign to bring new scholarship money to the band.
Leading the Tiger Band Commitment are Clemson graduates Debbie Stapleton, Karmen Kingsmore, Ed Evans and Larry Sloan, school officials said.
“I look back on my days at Clemson, and especially my Tiger Band days, and we (students) were truly a family,” said Mr. Sloan, campaign chairman.
Band members ate, traveled and rehearsed together. Since graduating from Clemson, he said, he’s wanted to see the establishment of scholarships for all Tiger Band members.
When Tiger Band celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005, he and the three other graduates decided to embark on a two-year campaign to raise $2 million dollars for the Clemson University Tiger Band Association endowment. The endowment currently supports 10 scholarships, officials said.
Cash donations are accepted and greatly appreciated for the new campaign, officials said. But the effort focuses more on establishing pledges of future donations. The pledges can be made in the form of beneficiary designations in wills, individual retirement accounts or life insurance policies, or in any other way a donor chooses, officials said.
The campaign features several naming opportunities. A contribution of a certain amount may allow a donor, for example, to arrange for a band section or position to be exclusively named for a particular individual.
