Leduc County is again accepting applications for the Environmental Committee Scholarship awards.

The $1,000 awards were established to assist students in post-secondary education studying the environment and environmental stewardship.

“The environmental committee sees its role to try and promote people to be good stewards of the environment. This is such a good program for the community and the environment,” said Darryl Rubis, assistant county manager for Leduc County.

“I think it’s excellent that Leduc County is giving this to people studying environmental science,” said Marcel Goudreau, one of this year’s winners and a fourth- year Environmental Science student who is majoring in land reclamation.

To be eligible for the award applicants must be residents of Leduc County, a Canadian Citizen and enrolled in a post-secondary program, preferably with a full course load.

To apply, students need to provide a written submission stating how their field of study can benefit the environment. They also need to give a written confirmation of their enrollment and acceptance to a university or college program that has an environmental aspect to it.

“We try to pick applicants from across the county if possible. Sometimes we don’t get applications from all over the county. We do encourage everyone to apply. Even if (the applicant) thinks the application isn’t good that might not be the case. It might be very good,” said Coun. Ruth Harrison, a member of the environment committee.

“Most applicants are very good and it’s difficult to choose. They can reapply (if they don’t get the scholarship the first time around). It gives them a second chance, so if they don’t get it for the spring (round of applications) they can re-apply for fall.”

“Hopefully the students will come back to Leduc and get jobs here and help us be good stewards of the land,” said Coun. Audrey Kelto, another member of the environment committee.
Goudreau says he plans on doing some work in Leduc County to bring abandoned sites back to their original states.

All applications can be sent to the office of the assistant county manager.

The application deadline for scholarship is Nov.1.
