MIT lands $2M in pair of Amgen scholarship grants

BMIT is scheduled to receive two grants of $1 million each from the Amgen Foundation for its Amgen Scholars program for undergraduate students interested in science and biotechnology.
The money from one grant is earkmarked to fund a 30-student summer program through 2010 for MIT students and students recruited from other higher education institutions. The second grant would support the scholarship program’s national office, which Cambridge-based MIT is expected to lead over the next four years.
In 2005 MIT received $567 million in research funding. MIT houses more than 50 research centers and laboratories including the Center for Materials Science and Engineering, Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies and Lincoln Laboratory.
Amgen Scholars is a $25 million, eight-year program to support students interested in pursuing careers in science. Ten other universities nationwide were selected to participate in the program.
Other participating universities include the California Institute of Technology, Columbia University/Barnard College, Howard University, Stanford University, the University of California Berkeley, the University of California Los Angeles, the University of California San Diego, the University of California San Francisco, and the University of Washington.
Amgen is based in Thousand Oaks, Calif. and employs 18,000 people. The company reported 2005 revenue of $12 billion.
