Scholarship Challenge kicks off 27th year

WAVERLY - The annual Scholarship Challenge event kicked off its 27th season Thursday with a special luncheon held at The Club at Shepard Hills.

The luncheon was attended by the team advisors from the 24 Twin Tier high schools participating in the senior high edition and the six middle schools that are taking part in the junior high edition.

Those who attended watched a video of last year’s championship match between Waverly and Towanda; drew for the pairings of this year’s competition, which begins Jan. 27; and went over the rules for the annual radio quiz show.

It was also announced that three new schools will be participating in the 27th Annual Scholarship Challenge - Cortland High School, Addison High School and Watkins Glen High School.

This year’s pairings are:

€ Jan. 27: Montrose will face Sayre; Wyalusing will face Canton; the Montrose-Sayre winner will face Mansfield; and the Wyalusing-Canton winner will face Troy. The winners of those final two matches will face each other for a berth in the challenge finals on March 24.

€ Feb. 10: Elmira Free Academy will face Candor; defending champion Waverly will face Spencer-Van Etten; the EFA-Candor winner will face Elmira Southside; and the Waverly-S-VE winner will face Cortland. The winners of those final two matches will face each other for a berth in the challenge finals on March 24.

€ Feb. 24: Northeast Bradford will face Sullivan County; Towanda will face Athens; the NEB-Sullivan County winner will face Blue Ridge; and the Towanda-Athens winner will face Wellsboro. The winners of those final two matches will face each other for a berth in the challenge finals on March 24.

€ March 10: Elmira-Notre Dame will face Watkins Glen; Maine-Endwell will face Addison; the END-Watkins Glen winner will face Tioga Central; and the M-E-Addison winner will play Owego Free Academy. The winners of those final two matches will face each other for a berth in the challenge finals on March 24.

The web page for the 27th Annual Scholarship Challenge will be relaunched on Nov. 1 and those who cannot attend the event can listen to it live on WATS-WAVR, or over the Internet by going to www.watswavr.com.

The 27th Annual Scholarship Challenge will begin at noon on Jan. 27 in the Waverly High School auditorium.
