Burns & Levinson Kicks Off 2nd Annual Power of an Idea Scholarship Contest

October 31st, 2006 - Posted in Education, Scholarship

Burns & Levinson LLP today announced the launch of the Second Annual “Power of an Idea” (TM) scholarship contest, a creative competition that is expected to draw scores of student applicants from Boston public high schools.

Under competition rules, Boston public high school students in grades 9 through 12 are eligible to compete for the chance to win a $15,000 scholarship to be used for higher education tuition and expenses. Burns & Levinson will also provide legal patent services for the winning device, machine or process.

“Burns & Levinson is committed to building upon the successes of last year’s competition,” said David P. Rosenblatt, managing partner for Burns & Levinson. “We are once again looking forward to encouraging Boston public high school students’ interest in scientific exploration.”

During the inaugural competition held last May, Dianna Marcellus of Boston’s Hyde Park neighborhood took top honors, earning the $15,000 scholarship and legal patent services.

Marcellus, a student at the John D. O’Bryant School of Math & Science, was applauded by the judges for her invention’s creativity and ingenuity. Judges noted that it may have additional uses, particularly for medical applications.

Boston school administrators have received packets of information this month describing the contest timeline along with contest applications. During the course of the next several months, specific information and help sessions will be offered to students at area schools. Judging for the contest will occur in early 2007 and the awards ceremony will be held in the spring of 2007 at a place to be determined.

Burns & Levinson attorneys David W. Gomes and Anne C. Pareti, members of the firm’s Intellectual Property/SciTech group, will participate throughout the next several months, offering their expertise and guidance to participating students.

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino lauded Burns & Levinson’s efforts. “I am pleased to see Burns & Levinson is committed to stoking the flames of scientific exploration in the next generation of Boston’s innovators,” said Menino.

Rosenblatt noted that a deeper mission for the competition is to make a statement to the city of Boston and to all Boston law firms about the value of getting involved. “This competition is also about giving back to our community,” he said.
