Greene County Foundation to host scholarship, career fair
November 25th, 2006 - Posted in Education, ScholarshipSWITZ CITY - The Greene County Foundation is hosting a county-wide scholarship and career fair from 5-9 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at the Greene County Cooperative Extension Service at 4-H Fairgrounds.
Many colleges, universities and employers will be on hand to answer questions from Greene County high school students and their parents about programs and financial aid.
“The Foundation is partnering with the Bloomington Life Sciences Partnership to bring information to county high school students or other residents interested in a career change about job opportunities in the life sciences and health care fields,†said Foundation Executive Director Kerry Conway.
Employers participating include: Boston Scientific, Cook, Baxter Pharmaceuticals and other local businesses.
This year the Foundation is providing customized college cost estimation services for all Greene County families.
“Families of all Greene County students will be able to get a handle on the expected family contribution to the cost of attending a post secondary school,†Conway said. “So often, our students from Greene County are first generation college students and many families are overwhelmed at the many options and the high cost. The National Center for College Costs will provide very concrete answers to their questions. By completing the College Costs Estimator form, families will receive a customized report summarizing the results of the Estimator analysis. Families also will have access to the staff at the National Center for College Costs via a toll-free line and e-mail in the months/years ahead at no cost should they need assistance dealing with college costs and financial aid issues.â€
Information about the College Cost Estimator program will be provided in the conference room at the fairgrounds every hour on the half hour throughout the evening. Every hour on the hour a seminar about career opportunities in the life sciences field is scheduled.
“High school students or anyone in the community interested in a career change is welcome to attend the seminars. The presentation will include information about salary levels, training requirements and financial aid availability,†Conway noted.
Local organizations that award scholarships to Greene County high school graduates are encouraged to attend. Please call the Foundation office at 659-3142 to make certain that there are tables and chairs set up for your representatives, Conway said.
Greene County Foundation President Cam Trampke added, “It’s important to plan early for scholarship applications. Please come and take a look around, even if you are just a freshman this year. You’ll be able to get many of your questions answered about attending college and learn about all of the scholarship opportunities available for graduates of Greene County high schools.â€
