McAuliffe Scholarship recipients announced

The Christa Corrigan McAuliffe Center for Education and Teaching Excellence at Framingham State College awarded the Christa Corrigan McAuliffe Scholarship to six Framingham State students, including Madison Dennis of Oxford, Kara Giuliano of Foxborough, Carolyn McGrath of Westborough, Christine McMahon of Framingham, Meghan Patrick of North Grafton and Jillian Sharpe of Needham.

Administered through the McAuliffe Center and the college’s Financial Aid Office, the Christa Corrigan McAuliffe Scholarship Program was created to attract, recognize and encourage exceptionally talented students wishing to study at the college. Successful applicants are awarded $1,000 toward full-time tuition and expenses, renewable for up to four years.

The Christa Corrigan McAuliffe Scholarship is available to students who present exemplary academic credentials combined with evidence of noteworthy achievement in non-academic areas. All prospective freshmen and/or transfer day division students who attain a 3.5 grade point average are eligible. Current undergraduate students at FSC enrolled full time for at least one semester and carrying a minimum of three course credits are eligible for this scholarship. Students must present evidence of a demonstrated talent in one of the following: art, music, drama, creative writing,

journalism, school or community leadership and specific academic discipline or other suitable area.
Included in this year’s awards ceremony was the annual recognition of the Teacher of the Year award presented by the McAuliffe Center and The Turner N. Wiley Teacher Award presented by the Challenger Center for Space Science Education. This year’s recipient of both these awards is Caroline Goode of Buzzards Bay and Nokomis Fla. Caroline has been a motivating force and the state coordinator for the National Science Teachers Association, “Building a Presence for Science” program in Massachusetts, administered through the McAuliffe Center at Framingham State College; the McAuliffe Center sponsored Space Day held on the college campus each spring, and she managed the NESSG Grant as well as teaching several McAuliffe Center workshops.

Prior to her association with the McAuliffe Center, Caroline was a science teacher at the John W .Rogers Middle and Esten Schools in Rockland. A plaque commemorating the McAuliffe Center award will be on display in the McAuliffe Center.

The Christa McAuliffe Center’s primary purpose is to support teachers in their work. The Christa McAuliffe Center was established on the campus of Framingham State College to continue the educational mission which was the life work of FSC’s most notable graduate.
