Kennametal Foundation established scholarship program for Fallon’s WNCC
December 29th, 2006 - Posted in Education, ScholarshipKennametal announced the establishment of a local scholarship program focusing on science and engineering for Lahontan Valley students attending
Western Nevada Community College’s Fallon Campus.
“We are looking to provide opportunities in Churchill County in pre-engineering, science and math classes, that could ultimately benefit our company, but most certainly have a positive impact in the community by offering higher education opportunities,” said Gary Peterson, General Manger at Kennametal Nevada
The Kennametal Foundation issued a science/engineering grant for the Fallon campus of Western Nevada Community College totaling $2,640. This will cover tuition and fees for two engineering/science students for up to three years. Recipients will be determined by the WNCC Scholarship Committee.
“We are looking at developing skills that will be used in a manufacturing and industrial environment,” said Bus Scharmann, Dean of WNCC Fallon campus and Rural Development Programs. “This could include everything from science and math, to business, accounting and even some of the vocational trades.”
Peterson said Kennametal and WNCC officials will evaluate the initial response to the scholarship program to determine if the program should continue on a regular basis. The WNCC grant becomes part of the Kennametal Foundation’s global Technology Education Network–called TechEdNet. The program focuses over 60 percent of the Foundation’s annual budget on post-secondary education in engineering, science and manufacturing trades in communities around the world where Kennametal employees live and work.
“This is the kind of partnership we seek with local industry, so that we can better serve the Churchill County community, better serve our students,” Scharmann said.
