Bethany biology receives grant
December 31st, 2006 - Posted in College Grant, EducationBethany College has received a $20,000 West Virginia Experimental Program to Stimulate competitive Research Instrumentation and Innovation grant, according to college officials.
The funds will be used to purchase equipment for the biology department to assist in the teaching and research of physiology and behavior, including equipment used to measure vital signs.
“This substantial enhancement of the equipment available for students will help assure Bethany’s continued ability to produce students who can successfully compete for opportunities at professional and graduate schools,†said John T. Burns, biology professor, who applied for the grant.
A learning laboratory for the study of autorhythmometry, or the study of a person’s one physiology, and cycles research will be established in Kirkpatrick Hall by the spring semester. The laboratory also will used to study animal physiology, biological rhythms and genetics.
It will assist in the on-going study of the effect of travel on the circadian rhythms of fruit flies. Research has been carried out over the past four years by transporting two strains of fruit flies from Bethany to Fresno, Calif.
The grant was awarded by WVEPSCoR, which administers grant and education programs in conjunction with the primary Research Infrastructure Improvement award from the National Science Foundation and provides proposal development assistance to researchers.
