Arizona State University is seeking solutions to issues facing the state from high school seniors.

The Young Steward of Public Policy Scholarship is based on an essay about a public issue important to the state. Students will have to analyze a specific public issue affecting the state and its residents and include specific recommendations for policy makers on how to address the issue, according to a statement.

The scholarship is provided through the university’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy. Applications must be received by March 15.

The first place winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship to ASU, while the second place winner will receive a $1,000 ASU scholarship.

Richard and Elaine Morrison, of Gilbert, established the scholarship program. Richard Morrison is the son of Marvin and June Morrison, the institute’s founders.

The Morrisons established the scholarship in 2002 to mark the 20th year of the institute, said Karen Leland, the institute’s manager of public affairs. The first scholarships were handed out in 2003.

“It would be a really special way to get our youth in the state involved in public policy,” Leland said. “It has definitely done that.”

Forty applications were received in 2006, and more are expected this year, she said. A committee chooses the winners.

“Every year it grows,” Leland said.

Both scholarship winners’ essays will be published in The Arizona Republic and Tucson Citizen, which are also sponsoring the scholarships.
