The youngest child of Coretta Scott King announced a scholarship today at Spelman College in memory of her mother on the one-year anniversary of her death.

The Reverend Bernice King says the scholarship will be called “Be A King.” Bernice King — who is a Spelman alumna says the endowment will pay tribute to her mother’s life service, “to human rights and the philosophy of nonviolent social change.”

Mrs. King died January 30th, 2006, at age 78 after battling ovarian cancer and the effects of a stroke. An activist in her own right, she also fought to shape and preserve her husband’s legacy after his death and founded what became the Martin Luther King Junior Center for Nonviolent Social Change.

The scholarship was established with $100,000 from Bernice King and a $75,000 contribution from The Home Depot.

The scholarships will go to students pursuing a degree in education, music or psychology — all areas of interest and importance to Mrs. King.

The “Be A King Scholarship” will award two $7,500 for the 2007-2008 academic year to two rising seniors. Spelman will review applications; Bernice King will select the scholarship recipients.
