Gulfstream Park Establishes Scholarship to Honor Barbaro

Florida’s Gulfstream Park race track has established a scholarship in his name.

Track executives say the Barbaro Foundation will offer at least $20,000 each year to high school students planning to study veterinary medicine at the University of Florida. Further details are still being sorted out.

Last month, the Maryland Jockey Club decided to rename one of the races on the undercard of the Preakness. The Sir Barton Stakes — a graded race for three-year-olds that had been named after the first Triple Crown winner — will now be called the Barbaro Stakes.

Barbaro was euthanized Monday after suffering complications from breaking a leg in last year’s Preakness.
