Study abroad applications due

The deadline for summer 2007 study abroad applications is quickly approaching. Students wishing to spend their summer break in one of several different international cultures through UD’s Center for International Programs must turn in applications by Feb. 16.

Locations still available for this summer include China, Ecuador, Vienna, Paris, Dublin, several cities in Italy and two language immersion trips in Germany and Spain. A few trips also focus on specific areas of study; Rome, for example, is set up for communication majors while Sorrento focuses on law.

While abroad, students typically take seven credit hours: a one-hour orientation class and two of the three possible courses offered by UD faculty members. Often these courses help fulfill general education or cluster requirements, and through these courses the students are immersed into the life and culture of their respective destinations. There are no language requirements for the majority of the programs, only the suggestion to become familiar with some key words and phrases.

The cost for these programs usually ranges from $3,000 to $6,000, depending on where and how long the student is abroad. The majority of trips are about a month long, starting in mid-May or June, and cost around $5,000.

If cost is an issue, scholarships are still available for four of the programs. The deadline for these scholarship applications has been extended to Feb. 16, the date the study abroad applications are due. Programs still offering scholarships, ranging from $500 to $1,000, are China, Vienna, Paris and Ecuador.

Interested students can stop by the Center for International Programs office in Alumni Hall Room 116 to pick up a study abroad booklet, which contains the application. Students can also apply online at international.udayton.edu/edabroad/apply.htm. A $240 deposit is needed along with the application. Students can turn in their applications to the center’s office, along with a bursar’s receipt in the amount of $240.

Sally Raymont, programs director, oversees the study abroad program and feels it is a great opportunity for students.

“Studying abroad is a life-changing experience; students learn about themselves and gain a new perspective on the U.S.,” she said. “Students move from looking at the world through tunnel vision to a wide-angled lens, so the place where they studied is no longer a dot on a map. They’ll gain skills and qualities that will help both in their personal and professional lives. In short, it is an investment in their future.”
