A Penn Scholarship Fund for Women Over 30
February 5, 2007 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipIt was all women musicians who played to raise money for “Bread Upon the Waters,” a scholarship fund for women who want to attend the University of Pennsylvania and want to do it when they’re older.
“It’s a unique scholarship for women 30 and older. It’s the only scholarship of its kind that we have been able to find in the whole country.”
Founder and president Elin Danien (photo above) started it 20 years ago.
“I was a late bloomer — I started college at the age of 46.”
Danien said she noticed there were more and more “late bloomers” and they needed financial help:
“I thought instead of leaving money in my will, why not have a seed fund to start it now so I can have the fun of seeing these women grow?”
Patricia Campbell is a graduate, and now works for Glaxo Smith Kline:
“We were paying my husbands loans and my daughter was getting ready to go to college, so if I wanted to go I needed assistance.”
And why didn’t she go to college right after high school?
“Back then, you got married and had children, so why educate the daughters? My parents only had limited resources, so the money was put into my brothers.”
And about the name:
” ‘Cast your bread upon the waters and it will come back to you magnified.’ It’s a loose translation.”
