Alumna sets up scholarship
February 5, 2007 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipEastern Michigan University Alumna Sandee Rodriguez is creating a scholarship for disabled students in her name.
Rodriguez was registered with Access Services, a peer support group that promotes and encourages diversity, after she was in a car accident in 1995. The accident disabled her, causing memory loss and other injuries. Now she is giving back to the EMU Access Services community through her scholarship.
Rodriguez began working on the scholarship in 2000, working closely with major gifts officer Milton Jackson and Access Services Director Don Anderson.
Students who are registered with Access Services will be eligible for the scholarship.
“These are the scholarships that are set up by people who care. She’s a great representation of EMU,” Jackson said.
There are no other scholarships for students with disabilities in the Access Services department.
There’s no date for when the first scholarship will be presented. Funding for the scholarship is still being raised; contributions will me made by donors, alumni and friends.
“We are in the beginning stages of planning a fundraiser to let more people know about it and to encourage more people to donate so students can benefit quicker,” Rodriguez said.
There hasn’t been a set amount for how much funding will be provided for each scholarship.
Rodriguez has hopes of a yearly fundraiser for the scholarship and continued donations.
“I also hope that Don Anderson has enough students and staff to take control of the scholarship and its details that I can have a hands-off position,” Rodriguez said.
“I think the service that Access Services provided was good to her, she’s a delightful person and we are always happy to see her,” Anderson said.
