Cuba offers free Scholarship to more Pakistani students

Islamabad: Scores of Pakistani students have reached in Cuba while several hundreds are expected to leave soon on a Cuban Government scholarship aimed at providing free education and boarding facilities to one thousand Pakistani medical students.

Of those 26 of these Pakistani students have reached Cuba on 12th of February last, and about 368 more Pakistani students will leave for Havana within next few weeks. Early this month the Cuban Embassy officials in Pakistan held three meetings with groups of Pakistani students who were selected to study Medicine in Cuba.

According to a press statement issued in Islamabad by the Cuban Embassy, the objective of these interactions was to aware the students about general background about Cuba, the achievements that the country had attained in the spheres of education and health, as well as aware the students about the iving and studying facilities that the Cuban government was offering to all the foreign students.”

The selection of more students for scholarship in Cuba will also be announced soon by the HEC and approved by Cuban Embassy in Islamabad, the statement said.

The Cuban government had announced the sponsorship for one thousand Pakistani students at the time when Cuba’s largest medical and relief team arrived in Pakistan in 2005 to help out the Earthquake affectees in Pakistan’s North Western Frontier Province (NWFP) and in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

It is important to note that with the arrival of Pakistani students this is the first time that Cuba is hosting Muslim students and has arranged specially Halal Foods and Muslim social environment. Special prayer place (Mosque) has been allocated for the Pakistani students so as to provide them a homely enrironment.Pakistani students would be staying at a Medical University in Province of Matanzas, close to the famous tourist resort of Varadero and at two hours drive from the capital city Havana.

The Medical School is staffed by a total of 50 best trained professors, with wide experience in medicine and educational profession. Many of them have worked abroad in humanitarian missions, including Pakistan. Pakistani student will also go through a six-month Spanish language course as most of the medical courses would be taught in Spanish which is the official language of Cuba.

Cuba is known for its international assistance with more than 29,000 Cuban professionals engaged in 60 countries, most, in Latin America and African nations. At present there are over 27,500 foreign students (mostly in medical subject) from 120 countries are studying in Cuba.
