Deadlines near for spouse, child scholarships
February 21, 2007 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipMilitary spouses and children planning to attend college in the fall must hustle to apply for the many scholarships available to the military community.
A few examples of looming deadlines:
• Feb. 21 — Scholarships for Military Children program applications must be turned in at military commissaries. Applications can be downloaded at www.fisherhouse.org.
• March 1 — Army Emergency Relief’s MG James Ursano Scholarship Program for Dependent Children, and the Stateside Spouse Education Assistance Program. More information and application are available at www.aerhq.org. (Their Overseas Spouse Education Assistance Program has varying deadlines, based on the start of college terms.)
• March 1 — Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society’s Vice Admiral E.P. Travers Scholarship and Loan Program, for children and spouses. More information and application are available at www.nmcrs.org.
• March 9 — Preliminary applications are due for the Air Force Aid Society’s General Henry H. Arnold Education Grant program, for children and for stateside spouses. More information and application are available at www.afas.org. Spouses overseas can apply for scholarships through the General George S. Brown Spouse Tuition Assistance Program, with varying deadlines based on the start of college terms.
• March 15 — The National Military Family Association’s Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarship Program. More information and application are available at www.nmfa.org.
Eligibility for scholarships will vary; some are open to National Guard and reserve family members, or children of retirees, for example. Most require the applicant to be listed in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS).
No one is guaranteed a scholarship in these programs. Selections are based on a variety of criteria.
