The Henderson County Education Foundation and the Vagabond School of Drama-Flat Rock Playhouse have formed a partnership to provide scholarships for Henderson County middle school students to attend FRP/YouTheatre educational classes.

This is the first FRP/YouTheatre scholarship program ever established for students and represents a commitment by the Education Foundation to provide scholarships to 30 middle school students each year for the next three years.

The first-year scholarships will be named the Wendy Wilkins Bailey Scholarships in memory of the former Flat Rock Playhouse student, actress and children’s teacher.

Scholarship recipients will be selected by Henderson County Public School teachers.

“We are excited to have an opportunity to discover students and give them a voice and a chance to grow into thinking, enthusiastic and considerate students seeking new and positive directions in their lives,” said Dennis C. Maulden, education director of the Vagabond School of Drama.

“The Henderson County Education Foundation is committed to fostering educational programs that enrich the lives of our public school students and reinforce the positive role the arts play in their academic success,” said Donald C. Jones, executive director of the Education Foundation. “With continued community support, the Henderson County Education Foundation will be able to provide scholarship assistance for those who may not be able to afford this valuable arts training for many years to come.”

The playhouse and YouTheatre use theater performances and classes to develop a strong sense of self-esteem and nurture social and communication skills.

Nearly 700 school students are enrolled in the FRP/YouTheatre this year with expected enrollment growth of 20 percent. Participants can perform in professionally directed productions and staged readings, along with in-school and after-school arts education programs and classes.
