Local students study abroad
February 25, 2007 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipMelissa Golden and Kathryn Adams of Toledo, and Rebecca Bostwick-Terry and Kindra Freedom of Newport, spent January studying abroad through a special study program at Linfield College.
Golden, a senior majoring in history, is the daughter of James and Candace Golden of Toledo. She participates in German Club and Wildcat Productions, the Linfield television station. She took the class Politics and the Past in Russia, which studied the political and cultural dislocations brought on by the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
Adams, a senior majoring in elementary education, is the daughter of Sam and Sandy Adams of Toledo. She took the class Asian Thought in China, which dealt with the thought and culture of China with an emphasis on major philosophical traditions.
Bostwick-Terry, a senior majoring in international business and marketing, is the daughter of David Terry and Julia Bostwick of Newport. She took the class Culture and Business in South Africa, which focused on post-Apartheid developments and the specific business challenges the country is facing as a result of Apartheid.
Freedom, a senior majoring in nursing, is the daughter of Moon and Vickie Freedom of Newport. She took the class Health Promotion in Cameroon, which provides an off-campus service learning experience involving health promotion outreach work in urban and rural areas of southern Cameroon.
The students were four of 194 students participating in on-site study programs through Linfield College’s January Term, a four-week period of concentrated study in which students enroll in one course, either on campus or at off-campus locations in this country or abroad. The program is designed to help develop global awareness and insights into major issues of the times as well as to broaden understanding of American society.
