Maude Williams Griffis Scholarship Is for African-American Nursing Students

RALEIGH, N.C. - Dr. Stephen Scott, president of Wake Technical Community College, today announced that Rebecca Lane Payne has established an endowed scholarship with the Wake Tech Community College Foundation for African-American students pursuing a degree in nursing at the college. The scholarship honors Maude Williams Griffis, whom Payne describes as a long-time friend, caregiver, teacher and healer for five generations of her family. Griffis, a resident of Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary, is 104 years old (now 105). “The scholarship is intended to celebrate the spirit, tenacity, compassion and humor with which Mrs. Griffis has lived her life,” says Payne.

Based on merit, scholarship funds will be awarded soon. Recipients must be female, have a “B” average, be of African-American descent, and qualify as a full-time nursing student and as a Wake County resident. Preference will be given to scholarship recipients who are members of Griffis’ church, Springfield Baptist Church in Garner.

“We are grateful to Mrs. Payne for her generosity in establishing this scholarship,” says Dr. Scott. “We hope Mrs. Griffis’ example will serve as an inspiration to students.”
