GOP women prepare to offer $500 scholarship
February 27, 2007 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipMary Wollenberg pitched the idea of raising money for a scholarship to help a Terryville High School senior graduating this year continue her or his education. The plan was very well received.
“I’m a former teacher and I work with another scholarship through my church,” Wollenberg said.
Sue Murawski, town councilor at large and club member, composed a rough draft of the application for the scholarship. She said she presented it at a club meeting and members helped refine it.
The one-page application requests information about the student’s family, family members already furthering their education, class rank, any employment and any post-secondary schools to which the applicant has applied or been accepted
Murawski added the application also inquires about the applicant’s involvement in church, community and school activities or other groups.
“We aren’t asking students to write an essay. We do ask that students write a paragraph on how they might serve the community in the future,” Murawski said. “That’s the most important criteria. We’d like to give the scholarship to a student who thinks in terms of public service,” she added.
The club organized a soup-and-chili dinner to financially support Wollenberg’s idea to help a high school senior alleviate some of the financial burden of secondary education and college tuition.
The one-year scholarship in the amount of $500 will be awarded near graduation time.
Applicants must be Plymouth residents. Applications are available in the Terryville High School’s guidance office or by calling Murawski at 582-6306.
