Nigeria: LondonMet Unveils Murtala Mohammed Scholarship
February 28, 2007 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipThe London Metropolitan University (LondonMet) has announced its first annual full tuition postgraduate scholarship in the name of the former Head of State, Late General Murtala Muhammed.
Addressing newsmen in Lagos, Director of the university’s Nigeria office, Mrs. Lebari Ukpong said the scholarship will be awarded to only one first class science graduate from a reputable university, who must have first applied and obtained an unconditional offer to study at LondonMet. She said the scholarship is restricted to science courses because the university is interested in increasing and developing professionals in this field.
She explained that the scholarship was named after the former Head of State “because of the values he stood for in the short time he ruled Nigeria, which is appreciated by the various public and private facilities named after him by the government and other organizations. Again the outstanding involvement of the Murtala Muhammed Foundation in various charities and areas of human development has made them a brilliant choice of organization to partner with for this scholarship.
Shedding more light on the activities of the university in Nigeria, Ukpong disclosed that the university opened its office in Nigeria 2004 and offers free services such as, providing prospectus, Application forms and their processing, issuing offer letters, visa counseling and support; enrolment and getting accommodation for students wishing to study in LondonMet as well as the Murtala Mohammed scholarship scheme.
Responding, the Programme Officer of MMF Feyi Ilesanmi said that the scholarship scheme is in fulfilment of the vision of the General.
According to him “Today the London Metropolitan University has proven the vision and values of General Murtala Muhammed to be true, by awarding a full tuition scholarship opportunity to eligible Nigerians to make their destiny. We believe that a nation is only advanced as its people’s development, therefore we have chosen to partner with LondonMet.” He added that the scheme is a sign of commitment to the development of Nigeria.
The Director UK Trade and Investment, Mr. Peter Stephenson and the Education UK Partnership Manager British Council, Mr. Akin Alamu commended Mrs. Ukpong for her credibility and commitment in championing the activities of the university in Nigeria.
Meanwhile interested candidates should apply in writing and include their CV and a personal statement of reasons why they should be awarded the scholarship to the Nigeria office located in Lagos.
