Information Session Held on Taiwan Scholarship Programme
March 20th, 2007 - Posted in Education, ScholarshipA one-day information session on Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) Higher Education scholarship programmes was held on Tuesday at the Gambia Telecommunication and Multi-Media Institute in Kanifing.
Speaking on the occasion, the Taiwanese Ambassador to the Gambia, H.E. Dr Patrick Chang, gave an overview of Taiwan’s education system.
According to him, there are one hundred and sixty-two universities and colleges in Taiwan. Ambassador Chang revealed that currently there are twenty-five Gambian students in Taiwan studying a special petroleum course and another fifteen pursuing their education in Taiwan.
“We do hope that more students will go and study in Taiwan,†he said, adding that Taiwan has a close cooperation with the University of The Gambia (UTG), which is manifested in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding last year between the UTG and the Taipei University of Technology.
Professor Andreas Steigen, vice-chancellor of the UTG, advised students to take the session seriously.
Musa Sowe, Director of Higher Education, acknowledged the personal efforts of Ambassador Chang towards the Gambia’s development while describing Taiwan as a good friend of The Gambia.
For his part, Mr Joseph Huang, Programme Manager, Taiwan ICDF, said they have been cooperating with thirteen universities in twenty-one fields of study.
He revealed that the scholarships provided by the Taiwan ICDF are complete and also cover the airfares and other expenses of students. Students wishing to pursue their Masters and Ph.D. degrees can apply as soon as possible through the UTG, he said.
The occasion, chaired by Mr Jenung Manneh of the UTG, was attended by lecturers, students, members of the Taiwanese technical mission team, and staff of the Taiwanese embassy.
