Speare president achieves fellowship

Michelle McEwen, Speare Memorial Hospital’s president and chief executive officer, has become a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), which has been called nation’s leading professional society for healthcare leaders.

McEwen said she has spent the past few years being certified. She said that the criteria have changed through the years but it has always been a testiment of commitment to the industry and the profession.

“I will take this wealth of information and education that I have acquired to help the hospital,” said McEwen. “This is something that will certainly help, not only myself, but those around me.”

ACHE is an international professional society of more than 30,000 health care executives who lead the nation’s hospitals, healt care systems and other health care organizations.

Fellow status represents achievement of the highest standard of professional development, with only 5,400 health care executives holding this distinction.

McEwen is chair of the board of directors of the Foundation for Healthy Communities and she serves on the board of directors of the N.H. Hospital Association, the Plymouth Regional Clinic and the New England Healthcare Quality Foundation, and is former president of the Northern New England Association of Healthcare Executives.

She received her bachelor’s degree in Finance from Plymouth State University and is pursuing her master of science degree in Management at New England College.

To obtain Fellow status, McEwen had to fulfill multiple requirements, including passing a comprehensive examination, meeting academic and experiential criteria, earning continuing education credits and demonstrating professional and community involvement.

She said she is committed to ongoing professional development and will undergo recertification every three years, where she will need to prove that she can meet the requirements.

She also said that part of the credentials that are focused on are the code of ethics and maintaining trends within the industry. She said community leadership and educational standards are focused on as well.

“FACHE is the gold standard,” said McEwen. “Achieving Fellow status demonstrates my commitment to the profession and professionalism, high ethical standards, developing and mentoring future leaders and staying ‘on top of my game’.”
