New Scholarship Offered For Black UCLA Students

March 30th, 2007 - Posted in Education

A private group led by several prominent UCLA alumni say they hope a new scholarship they’re bankrolling for black students will boost enrollment by African Americans.

The group is headed by L-A businessman Peter J. Taylor and leaders of UCLA’s Black Alumni Association.

They say they will make their first scholarship offers in the next few days and plan to give at least $1,000 dollars to each admitted black freshman who enrolls at UCLA.

They’ve already raised about $1.75 million dollars for the scholarships.

UCLA has no direct role in the scholarships, but Chancellor Norman Abrams and other university leaders have encouraged private fund-raising to boost the campus’ dwindling number of black students.
