CARSON CITY-The deadline to apply for an Artist Fellowship from the Nevada Arts Council is Friday, April 6.

Each year the Nevada Arts Council, through the Artist Fellowship program, encourages the pursuit of artistic excellence and provides financial support to Nevada artists of merit. Nine fellowships of $5,000 each are awarded annually with three each in literary arts, performing arts and visual arts (including media arts). Three $500 grants are also awarded to the top honorable mentions in each category.

“By acknowledging outstanding artistic accomplishment, the program promotes public awareness and appreciation for the role of the artist in our society,” Nevada Arts Council Artist Services Coordinator Fran Morrow said.

All completed applications must be postmarked or arrive at the Nevada Arts Council’s Carson City office by 5 p.m. on April 6. The Fellowship Guidelines and Application is available by calling the Arts Council office at 775-687-6680 or on Arts Council website http://dmla.clan.lib.nv.us/docs/arts/forms.htm.

Since the program’s inception in 1988, the Nevada Arts Council has awarded fellowships to 117 actors, poets, sculptors, musicians, dancers, photographers, playwrights, painters and writers in recognition of exemplary talent and commitment to creation of new work. In addition to using the grant to produce art during the fellowship year (spending more time in the studio, developing a marketing strategy or researching new techniques), each fellow provides a community outreach activity relevant to his or her discipline. These events (readings, exhibitions, performances and master classes) take place around the state at a variety of venues and are free and open to the public.

The Artist Fellowship Program is one of the most competitive grant programs in the agency. Peer panels evaluate Fellowship applications and work samples in a public meeting. Applicants must be actively practicing in their discipline and must demonstrate professionalism and quality in their art through work samples.

Celebrating their 40th anniversary, the Nevada Arts Council was founded in 1967 as a state agency charged with developing and promoting the arts in Nevada. Statewide programs include Artist Services, Arts in Education, Community Arts Development, Folklife and grants. The Arts Council supports the work of Nevada artists, arts organizations and institutions and is funded by the Nevada State Legislature, the National Endowment for the Arts and other public and private sources.

The Nevada Arts Council is a division of the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs. The Department serves Nevada’s citizens and visitors through cultural and information management, preservation and promotion of cultural resources, and education.
