Smith’s Senatorial Scholarship deadline is May 15
April 19th, 2007 - Posted in Education, ScholarshipState Sen. Preston Smith, R-Rome, is accepting applications for his annual Senatorial Scholarship through May 15. The $500 undergraduate scholarships will go to one male and one female high school senior from his district, which covers Floyd and parts of Bartow and Gordon counties.
The following is a copy of the announcement letter Smith sent to students and teachers this month:
I am sending you this letter and scholarship application because this year my Senatorial Scholarship Review Committee suggested using various creative and artistic ways to expand the ways in whichstudents might demonstrate their leadership skills. I would ask that you inform as many students as possible about this scholarship and encourage them to apply.
When I was first elected to the state Senate, I created a Senatorial Scholarship to help high school seniors get the education of their dreams. Each year we have given a scholarship to one male and one female from Northwest Georgia, and it is an honor for me to help in this way.
This year one male and one female who attends school in Bartow, Floyd or Gordon counties, will be chosen to receive a one-time $500 scholarship. Awards are for undergraduate studies only and are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, age, gender, disability or national origin. Students interested in applying for the scholarship need to complete the enclosed application, demonstrate their creativity as specified in the application, and enclose an official high school transcript. Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all necessary information by the stated deadline.
The 2007 Senatorial Scholarship recipient will not be chosen by me but by the Senatorial Scholarship Review Committee chaired by Dr. Adam B. Clemons, a local educator. This scholarship is not funded at taxpayers’ expense but through contributions earmarked for the scholarship program.
Recipients of the scholarship will be notified after May 15, 2007. Recipients must enroll in an accredited institution by the fall term of the 2007-2008 school year. Failure to do so can result in a forfeit of the scholarship.
Please feel free to make copies of this letter and the application. Additional applications can be found on my website at PrestonSmith.org.
