Grant sets up yearly school scholarship in mum’s memory
June 1, 2007 - Posted in ScholarshipActor Hugh Grant will sponsor a scholarship at his old school in memory of his late mother.
The ‘Love Actually’ star will pay the annual fees of 12,840 pounds for one student every year at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith, London, where Grant studied in the 1970s.
The scholarship will be named after Grant’s mother Fymvola, who taught in state schools for 30 years and died of pancreatic cancer in 2001.
Head teacher Peter Winter said that the actor was prompted to set up the scheme after a visit to the school in March this year.
“Hugh is very fond of his old school and he did very well by the school. I have to say that when he visited he gave me - in an entirely pleasant way - the most searching grilling about what the school was doing. Like any donor, he wanted to make sure the money went to where he wanted it to go,” the Daily Mail quoted Winter, as saying.
“We are thrilled to have Hugh back on board and very positive about the school,” he added.
The first pupil to benefit from the scholarship is the son of a bus driver from Wembley in northwest London. (ANI)
