HBA Raises Funds for Scholarship Program
In another demonstration of how ‘homes build lives,’ the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County has raised more than $28,000 since May for its college scholarship program through golf and fishing tournaments.
The Spring Charity Golf Tournament held at the Crooked Creek Golf Club in Fuquay-Varina raised more than $19,000. The Fourth Annual HBA Fishing Tournament held in Beaufort, NC raised more than $9,000. Proceeds from both tournaments are donated to the HBA’s college scholarship program.
“We were extremely pleased with the participation from our members in these tournaments,” said Tim Minton, executive vice president of the HBA. “Our members want to help build a future for these students. We are delighted to provide opportunities for them to develop and hone their skills and education.”
In May, the HBA launched a media campaign on the benefits and contributions of the Raleigh’s home building industry. The “Homes Build Lives” campaign is part of the HBA’s new public relations initiative to raise awareness of the positive impact the industry has on the community. The association’s members routinely give back to their local community, and this scholarship program is one specific example of how homes build lives.
The program offers scholarships to Wake County high school students who plan to attend a public college or university in North Carolina, plan to attend Wake Technical College and those who will attend North Carolina State University in an engineering field. For students attending Wake Technical College, the HBA scholarship program is designed to benefit those enrolled in construction and building trades, including electrical and electronics technology, air conditioning, heating, refrigeration, plumbing technology, architectural engineering technology, civil engineering technology and surveying.
Scholarships are given to Wake Technical College students after their first or second year in the program. Granted on the basis of achievement, four were awarded in 2006. This past spring, the HBA awarded 13 scholarships to local high school students one to a North Carolina State University student who is a member of the HBA’s Student Chapter. The scholarship is granted on the basis of participation, leadership and work experience. Scholarships were also awarded to four Wake Tech students. All winners were announced at the HBA’s annual Scholarship Awards Dinner.
