Chesapeake Energy Corp. said Friday it would give up to $2.5 million to fund scholarships for minorities and “socially disadvantaged” youth.

The Oklahoma City-based natural gas drilling company is putting up $1.25 million, and will give another $1.25 million if the Dallas-Fort Worth communities match its initial donation.

Chesapeake (NYSE: CHK) has chosen The Dallas Foundation and Community Foundation of North Texas to manage the scholarship funds.

The foundations will create scholarship committees to manage the funds. The committees will be taking the first applications in January and will award the scholarships that spring. The scholarship fund per student could be as large as $80,000 over a four-year period.
