Grant to Help Build College Health Building: Construction Begins in Sept. On Dallas Campus
June 24, 2007 - Posted in College Grant, Education NewsGaston College will receive a $1 million federal grant for a new health building, Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and college President Patricia Skinner announced this week.
The grant is from the U.S. Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration and will go for site work and construction of the David Belk Cannon Health Education Institute on the Dallas campus.
The grant will be added to available construction funds for the building, including a $1 million combined gift from the David Belk Cannon and Belk Foundations given to Gaston College earlier.
In addition to funding from area business and individuals and a $1 million grant from the N.C. State Board of Community Colleges, Gaston taxpayers approved a $24.9 million bond referendum last November that earmarked $12 million for the health building.
The 83,000-square-foot institute will house several health programs. Gaston College plans to increase its health care and nursing programs and services with hopes of alleviating the shortage of health care workers.
Construction is to begin in September and be completed by February 2009.
