Financial Aid at FAMU

Nearly 90 percent of FAMU students depend on financial aid, so news of FAMU’s accreditation probationary status comes as a blow.

“My financial aid is how I pay for my everything, so of course I would leave and I’m sure a lot of other people would leave too,” said FAMU student Tytianna Greene.

After three years Matefia Poitier says she’s attached to her university, but she says lack of money means lack of options.

“If I can’t get financial aid here I know my next option will have to be I might end up transferring to another school. Without it I have no choice. That’s my parents decision too because I need money just like everyone else,” said Poitier.

For the time being FAMU says losing financial aid is not a threat for current students since the university is on probation.

“Even while we’re in this probationary period students are still eligible for financial aid. They’ll continue to receive all of the services we provide,” said FAMU Spokeswoman LaNedra Carroll.

FAMU administrators say they’re rolling up their sleeves to keep its accreditation status in tact.
