Three college-bound students, one from each of the counties of Waldo, Knox, and Lincoln, have received scholarship awards from the Midcoast Maine Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

In addition to managing her small family farm near Belfast, Skye Lawrence commuted to school on Islesboro each day as part of a magnet program. She worked at the community radio station, played the flute in honors bands, and knits for kids, but her first love is her equine business where she teaches riding to people of all ages (and ranks 8th nationally in dressage!). Come fall, Skye will be attending St. Andrews University in Scotland to study economics.

Dierdre Birbeck of Lincolnville has made quite an impact on Camden Hills High School. Starting out as a botany assistant, she grew plants for landscaping the grounds and then went on to raise lettuce, tomatoes, and herbs for school lunches. Working with the cafeteria manager, she upgraded food offerings with locally grown produce from Agricola Farms, her summer employment. Dierdre has received awards in Latin and figure skating, but her first passion is landscape horticulture which she will pursue at Unity College.

Since childhood, Ariel Lackoff has been consumed with dance. Studying with various well-known teachers, she also has her own classroom of 3-11 year olds whom she introduces to ballet, tap, and beginning pointe. A high ranking student at Medomak Valley High School, Ariel plays oboe in the District III band and All-State orchestra, piano for many school events, and roles in several drama and musical productions. She looks forward to attending Muhlenberg College where she will major in dance but also explore other liberal arts interests.

These annual scholarship awards were funded for thirty years by the Midcoast AAUW’s Maine Author series. In 2006 this scholarship project was expanded into an annual weekend event as The Maine Author Series & Literary Festival. The 2007 Festival will take place at the Camden Opera House on November 2-5, where Maine-based authors, in a dynamic interchange, will explicate the theme of “Mayhem, Money and Mirth” as revealed in their writings.
