State Imposes Waiting List For Popular Financial Aid Program

Low-income students applying for financial aid to attend the University of Wisconsin campuses this fall will be put on a waiting list for one program due to uncertainty surrounding the state budget.

The Higher Educational Aids Board said that it’s running out of money for the Wisconsin Higher Education Grant program. The program gives need-based grants of up to $2,700 per year to students in the UW System.

Board officials said that they are starting the waiting list at the earliest point in the program’s history because they don’t know when the state budget will be signed into law or how much money the program will get.

They said that awards could be freed for those on the waiting list once the budget is signed later this year, but nothing is certain.

UW System spokesman David Giroux said that the uncertainty could deter some low-income students from starting school in the fall.
