Maria College has received a $7,500 grant from the New York State Higher Education Services Corp. to implement an online course to teach students about their finances.

The course is designed to educate students at the Albany, N.Y., college, and others, about student loans and repayment practices, as well as to equip them with practical financial skills for the future, including information about obtaining mortgages and creating and sticking to a budget.

Maria developed the course in response to an HESC request for proposals to creatively address the issue of reducing student loan default rates. Overall, HESC awarded $1 million in grants to 29 colleges throughout New York state. Other recipients include Capital Region BOCES in Albany and Columbia-Greene Community College in Hudson.

The Maria course will be offered beginning in Fall 2007. It is open to both Maria students and those at other colleges across the state.
