The Newfoundland and Labrador government is creating a university scholarship it hopes will encourage further study into the recovery of precious cod stocks off the province’s coast.

The Dr. Wilfred Templeman Memorial Scholarship, named after the late fisheries researcher, commemorates the 15th anniversary of the northern cod moratorium.

The scholarship, which will provide $5,000 for a two-year postgraduate program, is open to Memorial University students specializing in fisheries studies and research.

The province is providing $25,000 to the scholarship fund.

It’s been 15 years since Ottawa declared a moratorium on northern cod, and federal scientists say they see little evidence that the fish population is recovering.

In a statement, Fisheries Minister Tom Rideout says it’s hoped the scholarship will lead to more groundfish research including stock assessment and population dynamics.
