San Jacinto College has received a $3 million grant from the Texas Workforce Commission to help fund its nondestructive testing and inspection program.

Eleven area companies joined together as a consortium and applied for the Skills Development Fund grant through their member organization, the Association of Plant Inspection Professionals.

The community college said 357 jobs will be created and 314 existing jobs will be upgraded as a result of the grant.

San Jacinto offers an associate degree program and an occupational certificate program in nondestructive testing technology.

The college estimates in the upcoming year there will be a 20 percent to 30 percent shortage of qualified personnel.
