15 Georgian students to receive scholarship
August 19, 2007 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipFifteen students enrolled in the mechanical techniques/marine engine mechanic program at Georgian College this fall will each receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Ontario Marine Operators Association (OMOA).
A shortage of skilled workers in the industry has prompted the association to offer the scholarships.
“For every graduate of the Georgian program, approximately 10 jobs are available,” said Al Donaldson, executive director of the OMOA.
Students will be trained at the new Recreational Boating Centre of Excellence at the Midland campus. The facility features state-of-the-art equipment and educational resources for optimum learning capabilities, and will be instrumental in preparing students to move on to a career in the marine industry.
“It’s not just about fixing engines or turning a wrench,” said program co-ordinator Rick Corbett. “Boats and their accessories are becoming more and more sophisticated, and graduates find themselves gaining on-the-job training working on electronics, plumbing…, fibreglass and propulsion systems.”
Registrations for the fall program are still being accepted. For more information, contact Corbett at 705-526-3666, ext. 333, or rcorbett@georgianc.on.ca.
