Rotarians present scholarship awards
August 19, 2007 - Posted in Education News, ScholarshipThe Rotary Club of Somerville and Bridgewater recently held its annual scholarship awards luncheon at the Bridgewater Manor.
Eight students from local schools were awarded scholarships totaling $15,000.
One student from each of the four high schools in the area received a scholarship based on scholastic ability, service to school, service to community and need.
The Rotary Creed is “Service to Others Above Self.”
With the creed as a guide, the students were asked to submit a maximum 250 word essay explaining how the creed is applied to their lives. This year’s high school recipients are:
– Christine Fauske of Somerset County Vocational & Technical High School, she will attend Goucher College in Maryland to study dance theory.
– Christine Lau of Bridgewater-Raritan High School, she will attend Boston University to study English and journalism.
– Melanie Sackie of Somerville High School, she will attend Farleigh Dickenson University to enter special education studies.
– Kelly Brownett of Immaculata High School, she will attend Loyola College in Maryland to study business.
Scholarships based on the same criteria were also awarded to Sarah Fisher and Tatyana Koscheeva who attend Raritan Valley Community College. College President Casey Carvill, accepted the awards for Fisher and Koscheeva. Fisher has had to overcome many personal hardships in order to attend the college, where she plans to continue her studies, Casey said. Koscheeve plans to attend Rutgers University, Casey added.
Each of the preceding high school and Raritan Valley Community College students received Rotary Scholarships valued at $1,500, from the Somerville & Bridgewater Rotary Foundation. Semi-annual fundraisers are held by the club for the benefit of the foundation.
This year’s recipient of the von Stade Music Scholarship is Jacquline Russo, who attends Bridgewater Raritan High School.
Jacquline, who plays the Marimbas, performed a selection during the luncheon.
According to a release from the Rotary, she will be attending NYU to study music.
The Paul F. Davis Memorial Scholarship for $5,000 was established in 2007.
The recipient of the first annual Paul F. Davis Memorial Scholarship is Keith Hall of Immculata High School. Hall is a member of the National Honor Society, an athlete and a volunteer fireman while at the same time managing his other responsibilities, which also include his employment. Hall will attend Northeastern University in Massachusetts and major in civil engineering.
