Minnesota center Bryce Webster, a sophomore-to-be, will transfer after being granted his request to be released from his scholarship, the school announced Thursday.

“We understand his desire to leave the program, and we wish him the best of luck the rest of his career,” coach Tubby Smith said, in a prepared statement.

After a standout career at St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights, Webster was one of the state’s top recruits and signed with the Gophers under then-coach Dan Monson.

Webster often looked overmatched against Big Ten competition. He appeared in 28 games last season, starting seven ties on a 9-22 team, and averaged 1.2 points, 1.7 rebounds and 9.3 minutes per game.
