RPI gets $6.5M for scholarship program

October 14th, 2007 - Posted in Education, Scholarship

A $6.5 million gift from a retired business executive in Florida will allow Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to create scholarships for science and engineering students.

Robert Weissman learned about the school through a column in the New York Times written by Thomas Friedman. The best selling author had previously written about the school’s president, Shirley Ann Jackson, who coined the term “quiet crisis” about the need for more young people to study the sciences.

The donation will fund a scholarship for undergraduate students and a fellowship for graduate students in science and engineering.
