College sophomores, juniors and seniors who want to study a language and live abroad starting any time after July 2009 for three months or for a full academic year should apply by March 1 for a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship.

Interested students should look at the rotary.org Web site to download the Ambassadorial Scholarship Application forms. A student should contact the president of Wilton’s Rotary Club for additional information and to sponsor the application. (see Rotary7980.org/clubs).

Funded by The Rotary Foundation, the Ambassadorial Scholarship program is the largest privately funded educational program of its type in the world having granted more than 38,000 scholarships since 1947. Successful applicants serve as cultural ambassadors from the U.S. to the countries where they visit and study and will be assigned Rotary host counselors to assist them during their study period.

The three-month cultural exchange scholarship may begin after July 1, 2009, as does the academic year abroad. The three month cultural scholarship is a grant of $10,000 for travel, tuition, room and board.

The academic year scholarship provides a flat grant of $23,000. Decisions are made mid-September to early October after student interviews.

Several scholarships are available from Rotary District 7980 which includes Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, and New London counties.
