Singer Stefani starts scholarship fund for fire victims
December 8th, 2007 - Posted in ScholarshipPopular for her music, clothing line and perfume, singer Gwen Stefani is adding college scholarships to her repertoire.
The Gwen Stefani After-the-Fires Scholarship will be open to graduating high school seniors and college students who lost their homes and/or source of income in the October wildfires. Stefani donated $166,000 in proceeds from her Oct. 30 San Diego concert to the San Diego Foundation fire relief fund.
How many students who would benefit from Stefani’s fund has not been determined.
In addition to her scholarships, a $10,000 fund set up by an anonymous donor was announced Thursday for seniors attending a tribal charter high school in San Diego County.
Meanwhile, the San Diego Foundation’s annual scholarship program will include scholarships to help those affected by the fires. Details about those scholarships will be released in about two weeks, officials said.
Fueled by Santa Ana winds, the series of wildfires began Oct. 21 and forced 600,000 residents from their homes. The fires killed at least 10 people and destroyed more than 1,700 homes.
