Medtronic Spinal and Biologics today awarded the first annual Alan Olsen Leadership Scholarship to a student at Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering.

The $4,000 scholarship went to Chrystal Hayes, a MASE 11th grader. Hayes’ essay was chosen from a field of 32 other students vying for the scholarship. She says she plans to study either education or pediatrics in college and hopes to work with children.

The scholarship was named for Alan Olsen, the founder of Danek, a Memphis spinal company that has now become Medtronic.

MASE is Tennessee’s first charter school and is operated by the Memphis Bioworks Foundation. The school focuses on technology, science and math education.
